Regarding Creativity

I’m afraid that the creativity will run out. Just dry up. Like one days it’s here and the next it’s gone. Of course this is a silly thought. But don’t most of us who make a living designing things depend on our creativity? Well, some would disagree. But you see my point? If our creativity were to just dry up where would that leave us?

Then it’s a good thing we’re not responsible for our creativity. We do not have control over our own creative ingenuity. It comes to us as a gift in many different forms and fashions. And thinking of it in this way helps free us from any guilt or judgements we want to put on ourselves. Like I’ve said before, let’s allow ourselves to have all the stupid ideas we can muster, so when the good ones come along we can make room.

  1. I absolutely have a similar fear. I don’t think about it too much when I’m on a roll, but when I’ve hit a block, or just worked too many hours… I wonder if the creative candle has gone out. I think creativity is organic; it needs rest, it can be rejuvenated, and just as you said, we have no real control over it. What a relief… thanks for the post!

  2. I couldn’t agree more. I am in a point where my creativity well seems to be dried up. Makes me think whether I really deserve the nouns “artist”, “designer”… thrown at my direction.

  3. This reminds me of a talk from TED in 2009 by Elizabeth Gilbert: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/elizabeth_gilbert_on_genius.html I like her thoughts on how work and inspiration come together to make something amazing.

While I know much of my best design happens in those moments where external inspiration intervenes I have also learned that I have to be working for those moments to happen or I will miss them.
