People Not Popularity

I’m back with my second video blog, thanks again to all of you who left a comment, critique or other piece of advice. I value what you have to say and it’s helping me get better at this.

Today I wanted to talk about relationships, and how important they are in the realm of social networking. Regardless of how many followers I have on Twitter, because sometimes it can be overwhelming, I am glad to have a group of people to really invest in. And that’s what I think we should focus on, people not popularity.

  1. I just love the concept about People Not Popularity. The point about you really only connecting with 10-20 people on a daily basis is right on the mark. It sorta reminds me of Jesus. The bible makes it seem as if this dude had tons of people that just followed him around, like crowds in the upwards of five thousands on occasion, and if you really look at what the scripture tells us, he really only connected with the 12, and from the 12 he had a primary focus on the 3.

I don’t mean to get all Christianese on you or anything, but if it is good enough for God, it is good enough for me.

And in a more ‘secular’ tonality, we aren’t computers, we can only parse, and process so much. If we bite off more than we can chew, we really just end up diluting our focus to the point of nothingness.

More to the point, you rock Kyle, keep vlogging… You’ll continue to get the hang of it. One question, do you make up an outline of where you want the show to go? Or just have an overall concept in your head and wing it? Just interested in your workflow and I’m a fan of over-preparing. We plan how effective we want a website to be and what we want it to accomplish, etc… No reason you can’t apply the same principles to a video session.

Thanks for your willingness to contribute to the design community.

    • And now, the more I think on it, our goal as designers is how do we create the sense of relationship in the products we create. How do we get people to participate and be apart of the relationship that makes our endeavors worthwhile?

I’m a newbie, so I don’t have the answer… but I’m definitely interested in possible and effective solutions…

    • Matt – Wow those are some serious words. But I get what you’re saying. As for how I prepare the vlog, I do make notes beforehand about what I want to talk about. Today was interesting because I probably took 10 different takes to finally get where I was comfortable enough with what I was talking about. I’m a much better writer, so this video blogging is stretching me to express my thoughts and feelings in a different way.

  2. Hey Kyle,

I haven’t been to the site in a couple weeks, but was glad to check in and tune into this vlog. As I was listening to you talk about this concept, it not only rang very true to me, but it is a very apt description of my first impressions of you.

Yes, you have thousands of followers, but within a very few, very short interactions, you made me feel like a friend, not just a fan.

Keep it up, brother, you have much to offer and no shortage of those like me who need to hear what you have to say.

    • Mike – First off, thanks for your comment. How have you been? I checked your blog and it looks like you haven’t written anything in a while. I always enjoyed reading what you were thinking. I’m glad that the few times we connected it was more than just a generic hello/goodbye. I really enjoy meeting new people and I’m interested in finding out what their passions are. Hope you’re doing well and hope you can get some more stuff posted soon.
