one year blogiversary

In light of my upcoming one-year anniversary for my blog, October 13, I am offering up the chance to win the wonderful FIELD NOTES THREE-PACK for free to one lucky person. No shipping and handling, no call now and get two for the price of one gimmicks. Just a simple, straight-talkin’ free gift to give back to this community that I’ve been a part of for the past year.

Why, you may ask, am I offering just three plain notebooks? That’s a valid question. And to answer your question, upon verification from a google search about “one-year anniversaries” I found that the traditional gift has something to do with paper. Whether that be in the form of a notebook, a love letter, stationary, you get the idea. So I thought, perfect, since I’m a designer and most people who visit my site would be more apt to be a designer, or at least interested in design. This would be the perfect gift to keep your ideas close at hand in a stylish way.

The contest will run until next Friday, October 17. All you need to do to be eligible to win is leave a comment below with the best reason you can muster on why you’d like these notebooks. Note: spam and ad links do not count. Also, don’t forget to provide a valid email address in the input field, otherwise I won’t be able to notify you.

Thanks and good luck.

  1. Congrats on 1 year in the blog-o-sphere!
Those field notes would definitely come in handy for me on a daily basis as I am constantly sketching ideas in creative meetings at work, not to mention those times when ideas coming rushing in to my crazy head and I have nothing to sketch out or jot down notes with.

Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  2. Hey, I’ve never even laid eyes on a Field Notes memo pad before! They look a lot more practical than a Moleskin.

Living in Australia, far far away from where this product is made, I think you’re obliged to send them to me! ;-)

Actually, in all fairness, with this being my first comment, I’m probably not worthy at all!

  3. Congratulations on your blogiversary! I’d like these notebooks because the graph paper would make them perfect for things like charting knitting patterns and chip carving designs.

  4. Congratulations on the 1 year anniversary! I’ve also never seen Field Notes before this. Small portable notebooks are one of my weaknesses, I have them stashed everywhere.

  5. Hey!!! That’s good news, feliz aniversário =D
The reason i’d love to have these notepads is because they will be damn useful for me to sketch all the sickness i call design… well, at least they’ll be better than the 2 x 1.5 in post-it i still use :

  6. Congrats on the anniversary! I would hug you but that may be too forward since we’ve never actually met.
I would love these field notes because they would help me organize the search for my new Art Director job and keep track of all of my ideas and thoughts while I update my portfolio site. And since I just got laid off I shouldn’t exactly splurge on my own set right now. My money is being spent luxuries like rent and food. (Yes, I know it may be fighting a bit dirty to rely on my sob story but I’m fine with that. Being unemployed doesn’t mean I don’t like to win.)

  7. First of all, congratulations on your one-yearitude. What took you so long?

I would very much like the Field Notes, erm, notes. As a playwright, I am basically a professional eavesdropper (which I believe has something to do with falling off a roof) and the wee notesbooks are great for quick scribblins and dabblins. Right now I use napkins stolen from McDonald’s, and I think they’re starting to catch on.

Plus, I’ve always loved the Field Notes, and I mean that in a very real and physical sense.

  8. I’d like to let one of my favorite poets’ speak for me:
…Net I tow beneath the waves of the day,
giant ball of string or foil,
it holds whatever I uncap my pen to save:
    a snipet of Catullus,
    a passage from Camus,
a tiny eulogy for the evening anodyne of gin,
a note on what the kingfisher looks like when he swims.
And there is room in the margins for the pencil to go lazy and daydream
in circles and figure eights… From Billy Collins’ “Journal”

  9. Good afternoon, Kyle.

Field Notes have become an integral part of my day, having supplanted moleskines of the same size last Spring. I have for a few years used one notebook per subject (committee, continuing projects, departmental stuff, etc.) at work. I even made a custom box for them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jdbradway/2473558928/

After filling a series of notebooks I bind three together to serve as an archive, like so: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jdbradway/2473557890/ Much prettier and more portable than legal pads and filing cabinets. The Field Notes trump Moleskines for their lack of black cover; I can write opening and closing dates and index the subjects covered within the notebook on the inside cover.

I’ve found the grids useful in my personal life, as well. I’ve been using my first Field Notes to record coffee consumption and money spent in 2008, like any librarian geek: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jdbradway/2366932844/

Lastly, I’m just about out of Field Notes and will soon have to order more.

Cheers! Very nice work for the past year and congratulations to you.

    Jamie

  10. I would really like the Field Notes to mark the beginning of my career direction from computing into design and fine art. I particularly plan to do a photo essay which would require me to work a lot of the details out on paper in advance (very Hitchcock in method) as opposed to taking 1000 shots and using 10. I want 10 shots and use 10. That will take planning and concise thought. I will be using my new Nikon D90.

So, I’m at a cusp in life. I am in my last week of my undergraduate computing degree, looking to expand my personal and professional self. And I think it would be nice to have a record of the process of the photo essay in field notes that I could include as a part of the work.

  11. I should win them because I am cool and in order to maintain my coolness I need to keep my cool quiver loaded with cool notebooks. Cool?

  12. Happy blogaversaryday!

I would be grateful to win the Field Notes because I am a photograph archivist and I am constantly having to take notes regarding my photographs so that I can go to the book library and look up little bits & pieces of information for my cataloging. Currently I use a stack of old card catalog cards held with a clip for my notes but this arrangement is far from satisfactory. Twice I have dropped my card stack and had to collect & re-collate them, much to my dismay. A set of Field Notes would prevent a mishap of this sort from happening again. In addition, some of my collections are held in cold storage at a place called “Richmond Field Station” which I need to visit regularly to work on my material. How fitting would it be to arrive at the field station, fully dressed with Field Notes at the ready, armed with a freshly-sharpened pencil, graphite dust still dusting it’s point? Fitting indeed!

    Thanks,

    Jason

  13. Agh, they’re wonderful! The typeface reminds me of the futura bold-type font that seems to have been popular on New York municipal buildings in the ’70s; there was an old elementary school across from my apartment last year, and the lettering was in just this font – brings back fond memories. The notebooks would certainly be put to good use – I carry them in every purse and bag, and have to check the back pockets of my jeans before throwing them in the wash to make sure my little notes don’t get waterlogged. Thanks for throwing these up for giving away – I’d love to be a recipient.

  14. Congratulations on a successful year of blogging!

I recently ordered some Field Notes, keeping one for myself and giving the other two to a couple of friends. [Un]fortunately, I have more than two friends. And so, if I were to win your anniversary prize, I would give away one notebook to three creative people who would use them to develop a cure for cancer, solve world hunger and/or sketch that funny-looking guy sitting across from them the bar.

  15. Congrats on the 1-yr :) I hope it’s been a great one, and I wish you many more in the future :D

  16. Hello! I came across your site via Coudal Partners and just subscribed to your feed, so I can keep tabs on your excellent articles and design work. I’m a huge Field Notes fan, too! Great idea to share them as a paper anniversary gift!

  17. Congratulations on your blogiversary! Well done!

I propose that you give the field notes to the first person who asks for them outright. If I’m not the first in this list of commenters, I stand by my proposal. You have not because you ask not, right?

Would you please give me the field notes?
